HARRISBURG – Jan. 31, 2012 – The City of Washington will receive nearly $10,000 for its recycling efforts, state Sen. Tim Solobay and state Rep. Brandon Neuman announced today.
The grant, from the Department of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Performance Grant Program, is based on more than 1,000 tons recycled in the city for calendar year 2008. The program is intended to encourage communities to develop and maintain recycling programs.
“While much of the attention is focused on industry, there are things that every member of every family can do to protect the environment,” Solobay said. “Getting into the habit of recycling will continue the momentum toward reducing the waste stream.”
While curbside recycling is mandatory in communities of 5,000 or more people, DEP provides funding and advice for communities that want to start and maintain local recycling programs. The result has been more than 500 voluntary programs in smaller communities.
“Recycling is a great and easy way to help conserve our environment for future generations,” Neuman said. “This Recycling Grant Program is a way everyone can pitch in to help the City of Washington.”
